Every security vendor claims to catch spyware, so ranking lists are everywhere and most are ads in disguise. Instead of a fake scoreboard, here's an honest way to judge any anti-spy app — and where each of the serious options, ours included, actually stands.
Judge every candidate on five things:
- Detection approach: signature lists only catch known spyware; behavioral detection also flags unknown apps acting like spies
- Real-time alerts: does it tell you the moment your camera, mic or location is accessed — naming the app?
- Active protection: can it block sensors and cut an app's internet access, or only scan after the fact?
- The tool's own privacy: an anti-spy app that uploads your data is part of the problem — prefer on-device processing
- Honest pricing: core protection should work free; paywalled scans invite fake-alarm upsells
Google Play Protect (built-in, free). Your baseline — it screens Play Store installs and known malware. Keep it on, but it misses commercial stalkerware and gives no sensor alerts.
Anti Spy Detector: Anti Hack (free, 1M+ downloads, 4.5★). Behavioral scanning plus the widest active toolkit in the free tier: real-time camera/mic/location alerts, hard blockers, screenshot and clipboard guards, and a firewall that needs no root. Everything runs on-device — traffic never leaves your phone.
Malwarebytes (freemium). A respected general anti-malware scanner with a strong database; real-time protection is paid, and there are no sensor blockers.
Certo AntiSpy / Protectstar Anti Spy (paid tiers). Solid dedicated scanners with good reputations; expect subscriptions for the useful parts, and limited active blocking.
Security people don't pick one champion — they stack cheap layers. The combination that covers the realistic threats: Play Protect on (catches known malware at install), Anti Spy Detector running (catches behavior: hidden apps, sensor abuse, suspicious connections — and blocks them), and an occasional second-opinion scan with any reputable scanner if something still feels off. Total cost of that stack: zero.
The category attracts scams. Skip any app that:
- Shows scary "37 threats found!" screens before it has scanned anything
- Demands payment to remove what it claims to find
- Requests contacts, SMS or location without a feature that needs them
- Has no explanation for why it needs each permission (legitimate tools document this — for example, a firewall using Android's VPNService locally)
A real anti-spy app tells you exactly what it found, why it's suspicious, and lets you act on it without a ransom.
